Belfast Stammer Support.

You are not alone, we are here to help

About us.

We are Belfast Stammer Support (co founders Pete & Jamie) set up to help people who stammer/stutter. A big goal of ours is to inspire people who stammer by instilling confidence and self belief. We want to show everyone that stammering should not be a limiting factor in education or success in general.

Locally we have a range of people who stammer that make up part of our group. These include doctors, senior nurses, leaders in armed forces & emergency services, lecturers, sports stars and people who work in the media. A large proportion of which attribute their success and resilience to having a stammer. In fact across almost every profession you will find people who stammer, according to STAMMA latest polls 4% of adults self-identity as having a stammer.

Self help groups.

Life can be tough at the best of times, having a stammer can mean that sometimes we feel lonely and frustrated. Its hard to understand what this feels like unless you stammer yourself.

Self help groups make a real difference. Being around other people who stammer really does help. Sharing experiences can provide mutual support and a pool practical information and ways of coping. We are here to help make Northern Ireland/the North of Ireland a better place for people who stammer.

I have first hand experience of the benefits of self help (Pete here), getting to know other people who stammer like my mate Jamie has really helped me feel more confident. I can talk to Jamie openly about my experiences/struggles with my speech and he lets me know about experience’s that he has had and it makes me feel better and it's nice when someone else understands.

We have an adult support group running and meeting up frequently for a coffee and a chat, we also have a whatsapp group running for parents of young people who stammer and we are working on setting up our support group for young people who stammer (secondary school level age). Any queries or if you are interested please get in touch.

Our workshops.

At Belfast Stammer Support we believe that educationalists, carers and parents are in a unique position to have a lasting, positive impact on children who stammer.

Learners will gain knowledge and understanding by exploring the history of stammering in society, known causes of stammering and from personal accounts.

We can visit your school/club and explore techniques to give you the tools to achieve confidence building in young people who stammer, an understanding of the necessary reasonable adjustments as well as tips to consider when communicating with a child who stammers.

Get in touch for CPD for your staff, our services are free but if you would like to make a donation to help us run our support groups that would be appreciated.
